Why
1651?
In
September 1651, posing as Jane Lane's man servant,
the 'would-be' Charles II hid in these buildings while
on the run from Cromwell's Roundhead troops with a
price of £1000 on his head. He just managed to escape
to France and was eventually crowned king in 1660.
'1651' was opened on the 350th anniversary of this
escape.
